Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) is a completely smoke-free building — but that does not leave smokers stuck. Unlike many European airports, BUD keeps designated smoking areas both before and after security, including open-air smoking terraces inside the transit zone of Terminals 2A and 2B. This guide covers exactly where you can light up — landside, airside and after you land — the rules for vaping and heated tobacco, where to buy cigarettes at the airport, and how to fit a smoke break around a tight connection.

Can you smoke inside Budapest Airport?

No. Smoking is banned in every indoor part of the terminal — check-in halls, gates, restrooms, lounges, shops, restaurants and while queuing. The ban covers traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes and vapes, and heated-tobacco products (IQOS, glo and similar), which are all treated the same way. You may only smoke in clearly marked outdoor areas, and the airport enforces this throughout its buildings.

Smoking areas before security (landside)

If you have not passed through security yet, you will find designated outdoor smoking points outside the entrances of Terminal 2A and Terminal 2B. They are marked with signs and fitted with ashtrays. A few practical rules:

  • Stay at least 5 metres away from terminal doors and entrances.
  • Avoid smoking near queues, bus stops and family entry points.
  • These landside areas are open-air, so dress for the weather.

Landside smoking is the easy option if you are seeing someone off, have just landed, or arrive with time to spare before check-in.

Smoking areas after security (airside / transit zone)

This is where Budapest Airport stands out: it operates several smoking terraces airside, so departing and transit passengers can smoke without leaving the secure zone. The open-air terraces include:

  • Terminal 2A – FoodCourt terrace: a smokers’ terrace reached through the FoodCourt area.
  • Terrace Café (Terminal 2A roof): a partly open-air rooftop café that also serves as a smoking spot.
  • Pier 1 terrace (2A side): an outdoor terrace by the Pier 1 gates.
  • Terminal 2B terrace: an observation-and-smoking terrace after passport control, on the non-Schengen departures side.
  • SkyCourt mezzanine terrace: a central terrace linking the 2A and 2B sides.

The exact opening of individual terraces can change, so follow the airport signage on the day — but at least one airside smoking terrace is normally available on both the Schengen (2A) and non-Schengen (2B) sides. Because these areas are inside the secure zone, you do not have to sacrifice your place past security for a cigarette.

Where to smoke after you land (arrivals)

Arriving at BUD? After you clear passport control and collect your baggage you exit into the landside arrivals area of Terminal 2A or 2B, where you can use the marked outdoor smoking points by the terminal doors — the first chance to smoke after a flight. If instead you are connecting and staying airside, use the transit-zone terraces described above; there is no need to pass through into arrivals just for a cigarette. For everything else about landing here, see our Budapest Airport arrivals guide.

Where to buy cigarettes and tobacco at Budapest Airport

Hungary sells tobacco only through state-licensed outlets, so you cannot pick up cigarettes at an ordinary shop or newsstand. At BUD there are two options:

  • National Tobacco Shop (Nemzeti Dohánybolt): on the Terminal 2A arrivals level, by the arrivals exit, open 06:00–22:00. This is the only landside place to buy tobacco, and it is open to everyone (it is not duty-free).
  • Airside duty-free (Heinemann): after security you will find cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches at the duty-free shops. Note that cigarettes are not sold duty-free for flights within the EU — only for non-EU destinations.

You must be 18 or over to buy tobacco in Hungary. For the full airside shopping picture, see our Budapest Airport duty-free & shopping guide.

Vaping, e-cigarettes and heated tobacco

Vapes, e-cigarettes and heated-tobacco devices follow exactly the same rules as cigarettes. Do not vape at the gate, in a lounge, in a shop, in the restroom or while standing in a queue — use the designated outdoor areas only. Hungary also has strict retail rules on nicotine products, so buy what you need before you travel or at the airport shops above. When flying, carry vapes and spare batteries in your cabin bag, never in checked luggage, in line with airline safety rules.

Smoking on a layover or connection

Because BUD has airside terraces, a smoke break during a layover does not force you to exit and re-clear security — a real advantage over airports where the only smoking areas are landside. If your connection is tight, head for the nearest terrace (the T2A FoodCourt or Pier 1 on the Schengen side, or the T2B terrace after passport control) rather than leaving the secure zone. If you have a longer layover and want to head into the city, see our guide on leaving the airport during a layover and what to do on a Budapest Airport layover.

Hungary’s smoking rules in brief

Hungary has some of Europe’s stricter tobacco laws. Smoking has been banned in enclosed public spaces, workplaces and on public transport since 2012, and Budapest Airport applies the same standard across its terminals. Tobacco is sold only through licensed National Tobacco Shops, the minimum age to buy or use tobacco is 18, and e-cigarettes and heated tobacco fall under the same restrictions. Stick to the marked outdoor areas and you will have no problems — smoking indoors can result in a fine.

Smoker’s tips for Budapest Airport

  • Prefer a quick, easy spot? Have your last cigarette landside before you clear security.
  • All smoking areas are open-air — allow for rain or winter cold.
  • Confirm your gate first, then find the nearest terrace, so you do not miss boarding.
  • Check which terminal and pier your flight uses — the 2A and 2B terraces sit on different sides of passport control.
